"Astounding
Success"
Almost 1,000 riders participated in the event last month -
double last year's figure - raising over £10,000 for Southwell
Care Project (SCP).
"We were hoping for 800 entrants so it exceeded out
expectations," commented organiser Anna Joyce. "It was a great
day and we'd really like to thank not only the participants but
also the many marshals along the route; and so many local people
who have contributed food and drink for the riders at Gunthorpe,
Epperstone, Thurgarton, Morton, and not forgetting the legendry
chocolate chip cookies from the Waggon and Horses in Halam given
out at our refreshment stop in Halloughton Woods.
This event has involved all kinds of people in our community
including more than 250 local school children and their families
who tackled the five or ten mile distances and has brought in
much needed funds for this dynamic charity".
Cyclists travelled from far and wide to take part this year,
including Richard Frost who had journeyed up from the Hampshire
coast. "I've travelled a long way for this event," he said, "but
it's always worth it. Great course; spectacular views. I'll
definitely be back next year." Another rider, Gill Cartwright,
described Tonya's Challenge as "the best organised charity bike
ride we've ever done. Lovely!"
The organisers would also like to thank Nottinghamshire Police
for their hard work and support before and during the event, and
the many farmers and landowners who offered support and allowed
access to enable Simon Carr the route designer to place over 200
signs to prevent the cyclists from getting lost.
Tonya's Challenge is now looking for a local business to sponsor
the event to help it continue as the largest off road bike ride
in the Nottinghamshire sporting calendar. For further details
please contact Anna Joyce on 07723 455159 or Steve Shatwell on

raise as much money for Southwell Care Project as possible.
